Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of peer relationship quality on the relationships between shyness and social competence. Two hundred students in the fifth and sixth year of elementary school in Seoul, South Korea, were surveyed for this study. To examine mediating effects, Baron and Kenny`s(1986) model was applied together with the statistical analysis program, and Sobel`s test was used to verify the significance of the mediating effects. The findings are as follows. The key findings of this study are shyness had negative correlations with peer relationship quality and social competence, whereas peer relationship quality had positive correlations with social competence. In addition, peer relationship quality played a mediating role between shyness and social competence. In conclusion, this research shows that the quality of peer relationships should be considered when seeking to improve the social competence of shy children. It is necessary for parents to show greater interest in strategic support to improve the quality of peer relationship.
